The Ministry of Finance has reported that the Maldives government received just 3.6 percent of its projected foreign grants for the year during the first five months of 2025.

According to the ministry, the government expects to receive a total of MVR 2.6 billion in foreign grants in 2025. However, by the end of May, only MVR 94 million had been collected. In comparison, the state had received MVR 143.7 million in foreign grants during the same period last year, when the government had received MVR 237.7 million. This leaves the government with MVR 2.5 billion yet to be secured before the end of the year.

Despite the shortfall in grants, total revenue for the year so far has reached MVR 14.9 billion. Of this, 77.8 percent has come from tax sources. As of last week, the government had collected MVR 11.6 billion in tax revenue, representing an increase of MVR 151.3 million compared to the same period in 2024.

The data also shows that cumulative government expenditure stood at MVR 13.7 billion by the review date, marking a 17.9 percent decrease from the same period last year. While recurrent expenditure saw a decline of 3.8 percent, capital expenditure fell sharply by 64.2 percent.
