Ooredoo Maldives Debuts AI-Driven eKYC System
Ooredoo Maldives has unveiled its next-generation AI-powered electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) solution at the Mobile World Congress in Doha, introducing what the company describes as a faster, more secure, and fully automated approach to digital onboarding.
Ooredoo in a statement said that the system, which is now active across the company’s digital SIM activation channels, is designed to streamline identity verification and reduce the risk of fraud. According to Ooredoo, the technology processes customer registrations within seconds, capturing ID details, conducting liveness checks, matching facial identities, and enabling automatic approval for SIM provisioning.
Ooredoo said the customers using the new system are expected to experience significantly reduced onboarding times, with the process dropping from around 60 seconds to roughly 10 seconds. The company reports that more than 90% of registrations are now approved automatically.
Other features highlighted include the system’s ability to detect forged IDs or digitally altered images, as well as the removal of manual forms and in-person queues. Customers can complete the entire process using their mobile phones.
The platform uses a sequence of verification steps intended to enhance accuracy and security:
- Camera-based ID and selfie capture
- AI-driven optical character recognition and data validation
- Liveness detection and anti-spoofing analysis
- Facial matching and database cross-checks
- Instant SIM activation when verification confidence thresholds are met
Ooredoo Maldives said these steps enable a fully digital, paperless onboarding experience that consistently concludes in under 10 seconds.
Commenting on the launch, Khalid Al-Hamadi, CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives, said the Maldives’ status as a major tourist destination made reliable digital services increasingly important. “Providing fast, reliable connectivity and smart digital solutions to every visitor and every local is crucial to our mission,” he said.
