Ooredoo Maldives landed a submarine cable at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi yesterday, the first of its kind in the Maldives.
The company stated that the project establishes the island as the Maldives’ first private 5G-enabled resort, marking a significant step toward future-ready connectivity and a major milestone in the country’s digital advancement.
The submarine cable connects Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, Maafushi, and Ooredoo’s advanced Data Centre in Hulhumalé. Ooredoo Maldives explained that as it was designed with dual-redundancy and high-capacity infrastructure, the system enhances connectivity speeds, reliability, and resilience for both residents and guests.

A launch ceremony held at the resort was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al-Hamadi, General Manager of Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi TJ Joulak, Communication Authority CEO Ilyas Ibrahim, and other senior representatives from Ooredoo, Waldorf, and Maafushi City Council.
“This cable landing at the nation’s first private 5G-enabled island resort is a vital milestone in our journey to build a truly Digital Maldives. It empowers communities and redefines guest experiences through AI-powered services and next-generation connectivity,” Al-Hamdi said at the event.
Minister Thoriq Ibrahim noted the broader significance of the project, describing it as a milestone in the Maldives’ digital journey and a symbol of Ooredoo’s long-standing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
The development positions Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi as a digitally advanced hospitality destination, equipped with private 5G capabilities, a dedicated submarine link, and cutting-edge infrastructure, including a smart “tree tower.”
As Ooredoo Maldives marks 20 years of operations in the country, the company continues to drive technological innovation in support of national development and inclusive digital access.
