In Kinbidhoo, the Eid al-Adha celebrations began with the community coming together to cook Bodu Kunbus, a massive local sweet treat, a long-standing tradition supported this year by Ooredoo Maldives.

The sweet, made from flour, honey, sugar, coconut milk, and cabbage, is prepared in the island’s central square over several days, beginning on the day of Hajj. Residents cook the mixture in large pots with a strong sense of shared purpose.

Men and women take part side by side, while children observe and help, learning the steps from elders who have kept the tradition alive for generations.

Once the mixture is ready, it is poured into a tray and mixed with fresh coconut milk. A fire pit is prepared using dry branches, twigs, and firecrackers, and once the fire burns down, cayenne leaves and hot ashes are layered to complete the roasting process. The finished Kunbus is then cut and shared among all households on the island.

This year, Ooredoo’s involvement included support for the preparation phase. While the assistance was welcomed, the tradition remained centred on community participation, a hallmark of the event, which continues to be shaped by collective memory and cooperation.

Though the sweet is made only once a year, the Bodu Kunbus remains a symbol of unity and continuity in Kinbidhoo’s Eid celebrations.
