An opposition Member of Parliament has submitted a request to Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee seeking an investigation into the loss of funds paid in advance for a gas shipment by the state-owned company, Maldives Gas.
In a letter addressed to the SOE Committee, Maavashu MP Ahmed Shakir said the loss of USD 246,645, paid upfront for a gas shipment valued at approximately USD 800,000, constituted a serious allegation against a government-owned enterprise and warranted parliamentary scrutiny.
Shakir also requested that the committee investigate a social media post made by the Managing Director of Maldives Gas, Abdullah Mohammed, which allegedly contained threats directed at Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziad and Hulhumalé South MP Ahmed Shamheed.

The issue of the missing advance payment was previously raised at a meeting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim stated that the payment had been made in October 2024 for a shipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
“We have received information that the money paid by Maldives Gas as an advance payment for a gas shipment has been lost, and that there has been no success in recovering the funds,” Nazim said in the committee.
During a parliamentary sitting earlier this month, several MPs raised concerns that the Finance Committee had previously investigated a separate case involving a managing director of a government-owned company who was alleged to have gambled with company funds, drawing renewed attention to oversight and accountability within state-owned enterprises.
Parliament will resume its work for the year next month. The opening sitting of Parliament is scheduled for February 5.
