President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stressed the importance of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) playing a responsible role as the opposition party within the upcoming PPM/PNC government, during a gathering last night at the Social Center.

Speaking at the Social Centre during the gathering, Muizzu extended his appreciation to the MDP for its warm reception and to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for their meeting.

He also urged the party to uphold the principles of democracy even after taking office in November.

Emphasising the need for a responsible opposition, Muizzu stated that a responsible opposition plays a vital role in holding the government accountable and supporting initiatives beneficial to the nation.

“I urge you to prepare yourselves to function as a responsible opposition. This is something I wholeheartedly welcome. A democracy thrives when the government faces responsible opposition. Such opposition criticises government actions and presents improved policies to the people,” Dr. Muizzu declared.

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that national peace could only be achieved if the MDP fulfills its role as a responsible opposition, emphasising the importance of diplomacy in achieving the nation’s goals.

He reiterated his commitment to treating all citizens without discrimination.

The gathering witnessed the presence of Vice President-elect Dr. Hussain Mohamed Latheef, PPM/PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdullah, party officials, leaders of coalition parties, and a number of supporters.
