Authorities have closed one outlet after discovering it was selling tobacco products without the required permit, following the introduction of regulations allowing tobacco sales only through special authorisation.
The violation was identified during a joint operation conducted by the Ministry of Economic Development, the Maldives Police Service, Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service. The inspection targeted unlawful businesses, with six outlets searched as part of the effort. Officials confirmed that the cafe was found to be engaged in the illegal sale of tobacco products.
Police did not confirm whether any arrests were made during the operation. The intervention comes shortly after the Economic Ministry urged the public to report illegal businesses operated by expatriates.
The ministry received 29 reports within 14 hours of issuing the appeal, indicating a strong public response to the call for information.
