MV+ News Desk | July 9, 2025

Police statistics shared with parliament reveal that 112 tourists have died in marine accidents in the Maldives over the past five years, with a rising trend in such incidents.

The figures were presented during a meeting of the Committee on Secondary Legislation, where North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim raised concern over the lack of regulatory measures to address safety in marine tourism activities. He highlighted the Tourism Ministry’s delay in formulating regulations, calling it a serious oversight.

According to police data, drowning accounts for the highest number of deaths, with over 20 fatalities reported in 2024 alone. Of the total deaths recorded over five years, 68 were due to drowning, and 42 occurred while snorkelling or diving. One fatality was reported from a vessel collision during a snorkelling or diving activity, while nine others sustained injuries in similar incidents.

The Tourism Ministry has said it is drafting new regulations for excursions and water sports. A related advisory was issued last year, and guidelines have been put in place as an interim measure until formal regulations are enacted. Once implemented, the regulation will require service providers to adhere to safety standards and be held accountable for incidents.
