Trees Distributed Across Four Shaviyani Atoll Islands

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has distributed more than 1,000 trees to four islands in Shaviyani Atoll under the national Food Security Programme, aimed at strengthening food security and promoting sustainable food systems across the country.

According to the Ministry, a total of 1,159 plants were delivered to Funadhoo, Lhaimagu, Narudhoo and Bilehfahi this month. Funadhoo received 324 trees, Lhaimagu received 378, Narudhoo received 254 and Bilehfahi received 203. The plants were allocated to both households and offices.

The trees provided include breadfruit, waterapple, moringa and yam. The Ministry noted that these distributions were carried out through its agricultural centre in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, in response to requests from local councils. Earlier in June, 50 breadfruit trees were also distributed to Hanimaadhoo Council under the same initiative.

The Ministry stated that these efforts form part of wider measures to address climate change-related challenges, improve agricultural resilience and reduce reliance on imported food.

The government has also announced plans to establish an agricultural economic zone to further enhance food production. In addition, the Ministry is providing technical assistance to farmers in order to expand the agricultural sector and strengthen national food security.
