The process of issuing registrations for land plots allocated at Gulhifalhu began on 12 July last year. According to the ministry, the number issued so far represents 35.8 percent of the total 3,520 plots set by the current government.
The scheme was originally announced by the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government with a target of allocating at least 2,000 plots. The present administration increased this figure to 3,520, including requests from recipients wishing to transfer their allocation from Giravaru lagoon to Gulhifalhu.
Registrations are being issued at the former Housing Ministry building, in the section previously used by the city council.
The Gulhifalhu project commenced in July last year, with dredging works awarded to Dutch company Boskalis for USD 120 million (MVR 2 billion). Although the initial land draw was conducted under the previous administration, the current government has since revised the land use plan twice. The latest allocations follow a re-draw held on 30 May this year.
The interim government has also amended the agreement for the project, stating that the original arrangement prepared by the previous administration contained legal irregularities.
