Police inspected 12,424 vehicles and took action against 1,554 for dangerous violations during a month-long enforcement campaign carried out by the police to curb reckless driving and enhance road safety across the country.
During the operation, police stopped 27,186 vehicles, including 12,752 two-wheelers and 14,404 four-wheelers. Officers issued warnings to 10,870 drivers, comprising 5,037 motorcyclists and 5,833 car drivers, while penalties were imposed on 728 two-wheelers and 826 four-wheelers for serious traffic offences.
The enforcement effort also identified 260 drivers operating vehicles without valid driving licences, including 241 motorcyclists and 27 car drivers. Authorities towed 683 vehicles for various traffic violations, while a further 1,367 vehicles were impounded for illegal parking.
The intensified crackdown follows an increase in road traffic accidents and comes in response to a directive from the President to strengthen traffic law enforcement. The Maldives Police Service has since increased 24-hour patrols to improve compliance with traffic regulations and reduce risks on the roads.
