The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has announced that over 13,600 individuals have registered with the “National Register of Persons with Disabilities” as of November this year.
The initiative seeks to gather essential data to provide targeted assistance and promote greater inclusion for people with disabilities.
The register, which captures information about individuals with a range of disabilities, aims to ensure equal access to services and opportunities. The current breakdown of registrations is as follows:
- Physical disabilities: 3,912
- Multiple disabilities: 2,961
- Intellectual or mental disabilities: 1,954
- Hearing and speech disabilities: 1,720
- Mental disabilities: 1,499
- Visual impairments: 974
- Autism: 584
- Learning disabilities: 52
The government programme highlighted persistent challenges faced by people with disabilities, particularly the lack of suitable employment opportunities. In response, the government is collaborating with various institutions to match individuals with appropriate jobs and provide skill development initiatives, including internships.
Educational access for children with disabilities also remains a pressing concern. To address this, the government is strengthening efforts to ensure inclusive and sustainable education, aiming to accommodate all children regardless of their abilities.
Legislative measures to protect the rights of people with disabilities have also been prioritised. Notably, for the first time, individuals with disabilities served as officials in the recent parliamentary elections, marking a significant step towards inclusivity in governance.
The government has reiterated its commitment to improving access to services and opportunities for people with disabilities, aiming to foster a society where everyone receives the support they need to thrive.
