More than 2,000 individuals have lodged complaints regarding the failure to receive housing from the previous government’s initiatives in 2018, according to State Minister for National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure, Akram Kamaludeen.

In 2018, the previous government had issued documentation to a substantial number of individuals, granting them land or flats through various housing projects. It is estimated that documents were distributed to more than 11,000 individuals across these projects. As part of the social housing project, a total of 7,000 housing units have been successfully completed.

Akram noted that new documents continue to be submitted daily. The purpose of this initiative is to assess the government’s potential for providing additional opportunities to those affected.

Mohamed Arif, Senior Executive Director at the Planning Ministry, disclosed that a considerable portion of the documents and agreements lack proper record-keeping within the ministry. He attributed this to a lack of oversight during the document issuance process.

“Documents were being distributed from various sources with minimal ministry supervision. It is likely that there are more than 11,000 such documents in circulation, many of which are accompanied by supporting correspondence,” Arif clarified.

Arif stressed that the government is now issuing flat and land documents in strict adherence to established records and legal regulations. These documents are expected to remain valid even in the event of a change in government.

Some individuals have taken legal action to challenge the validity of documents issued by previous administrations, resulting in compensation payments by the government.
