Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that more than 2,500 containers currently delayed in Sri Lanka are expected to be transported to the Maldives next week.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, Saeed said the delays were linked to disruptions in global shipping routes caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
He stated that Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has been carrying out extensive efforts to ease difficulties faced in importing goods to the Maldives following changes in international shipping operations. According to the minister, these efforts are expected to reduce pressure on cargo transportation and improve the movement of goods into the country.
Saeed said information provided by MPL indicated that the delayed containers in Sri Lanka would be brought to the Maldives next week on three separate vessels.
The minister also highlighted recent trade statistics, noting that imports to the Maldives have increased by between 19 percent and 20 percent so far this year compared to previous years.
He further stated that the price index for staple food items increased by 1.95 percent in March compared to the same period last year.
According to the data shared by the ministry, the largest price decreases among staple food categories were recorded in fruits and vegetables. Vegetable prices declined by 5 percent, while fruit prices fell by 15.56 percent compared to last year.
