The helpline, accessible via the number 1677, was introduced on 21 February 2024 as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s first 100-day commitments. The service aims to improve access to mental healthcare and provide sustainable support for those experiencing psychological difficulties.
Statistics shared by the Health Ministry reveal that a total of 8,396 people have used the helpline to date. Among these, 2,576 individuals accessed the service in 2023 during the initial months following its launch, while 5,820 people have reached out so far this year.
The helpline operates around the clock, serving as the first point of contact for individuals of all ages facing mental health challenges. It offers mental health first aid, problem-solving support, and guidance on available services. Referrals are also made in line with established policies to ensure continuity of care.
Despite facing challenges such as a shortage of trained professionals in the field, the Health Ministry stated that the government remains committed to expanding mental healthcare services across the country. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen the helpline, increase the mental health workforce, and develop comprehensive policies to address the growing demand for support.
