Over 90 Candidates Met Financial Disclosure Deadline, Reveals ECM

The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has reported that 91 candidates who contested in the parliamentary elections have submitted their financial statements by May 20.
Among these, 56 were candidates representing political parties, while the remaining 35 competed as independent candidates.
Under the stipulations of the General Elections Act, all candidates are required to furnish their financial statements to the ECM within one month from the date of the election. The commission has set May 22 as the deadline for this submission.
These financial statements must comprehensively outline the expenses incurred by the candidates during the electoral process, covering both monetary transactions and property acquisitions. They should also detail any expenditures related to securing support and votes, including the sources of funds raised for such purposes, such as individual contributions and personal connections.
The ECM has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing legal measures against candidates who fail to meet the deadline for submitting their financial statements, as per the relevant legislation. Article 74 of the Act specifies that the failure to fulfill certain legal obligations constitutes an electoral offense, punishable by imprisonment for a period ranging from six months to two years, or fines ranging from USD 389 to USD 1,556.
A total of 368 candidates participated in the parliamentary elections held on April 21, with representation from six different political parties alongside independent candidates.
