Additionally, 1,158 requests were submitted to the Ministry for transfers between schools within Malé.
The Ministry also unveiled that since 2020, a total of 4,443 students have sought transfers to schools in Malé from other islands across the nation. The breakdown of school transfer requests between 2020 and 2024 is as follows:
- 2020 to 2021: 480 students

Maldives, comprising 20 administrative atolls and nearly 2,000 islands, with only 188 inhabited, faces geographical challenges in providing equal education access. Some islands have populations as low as 77 people, according to the 2022 census. These constraints have led to the adoption of multi-level and virtual teaching classrooms in some atoll schools, as highlighted in a 2019 education sector analysis in the Maldives.
