The latest annual report released by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sheds light on the significant outstanding amount owed to the State, amounting to over MVR 74 million, stemming from cases investigated by the Commission in the previous year.
The report indicates that only a fraction, specifically MVR 200,000, has been recovered thus far from this outstanding sum.
Published last Thursday, the report underscores the proactive measures taken by the Commission to pursue these overdue payments, despite its mandate not explicitly requiring involvement in the retrieval process.
Furthermore, the report delineates the Commission’s efforts to secure MVR 74,159,720.53 owed to the State across 15 cases investigated. It also discloses ongoing follow-ups to confirm the settlement of MVR 50,370,521.75, which various agencies are obligated to reimburse to the State.
According to the report, a total of MVR 234,531.57 has been successfully reimbursed to the State through five cases necessitating payments.
Highlighting 2023 as the second-highest year for compensation amounts owed to the State by agencies in the last five years, the report notes that 2019 recorded the highest demand, with agencies urged to repay over MVR 160 million to the State.
Additionally, the ACC’s annual report reveals that out of the 1,151 cases lodged with the Commission last year, the majority—561 cases—were submitted anonymously. The Commission registered 742 cases from the total submissions.
In terms of case distribution, housing-related issues dominated the submissions, with 216 cases, followed by 155 cases related to procurement matters.
