Over USD 80K of Undeclared Cash by Bangladeshi Passenger Seized at VIA

Velana International Airport (VIA) security officers confiscated USD 81,030 (MVR 1,243,810.50) in undeclared cash concealed inside a cereal box in a passenger’s luggage.

In a statement posted on X, the Aviation Security Command detailed that their screening team made the discovery yesterday during routine checks.

The Bangladeshi passenger was preparing to board a flight from Malé to Dhaka via US-Bangla Airlines.

Images and videos shared by the security command showed that the cash had been hidden inside a box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, a popular breakfast cereal. The money had been tightly bundled, labelled, and packed within a tinfoil packet that appeared to have been resealed.

Security officers opened the packet to reveal the concealed cash.

According to airport regulations, passengers must declare any sum of money exceeding USD 20,000.
