The Parliament has appointed Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarik to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), following the resignation of the commission’s President, Hussain Riza Adam.
Husnee, who represents the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), was nominated during Tuesday’s sitting by Majority Leader Ibrahim Falah, the MP for Inguraidhoo. The nomination was endorsed by 58 MPs present in the session.
Riza, who had been serving as the Parliament’s representative on the JSC and was elected President of the commission in June last year, resigned on Monday. He did not publicly disclose the reason for his resignation. Riza represents the Maafushi constituency in the Parliament.
His resignation comes shortly after the departure of the JSC’s Vice-President, Mohamed Niyaz, who is also a judge of the High Court. Niyaz stepped down last week. The position of Vice-President has since been filled by Yazmeed Mohamed, a presidential appointee to the commission.
Husnee also currently serves as a member of the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee.
