Today, Parliament approved Dr Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Dr Rameela received the backing of 38 members of parliament, endorsing her nomination put forward by President Mohamed Muizzu.
She was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 3 December 2025, following the expiration of the term of former commissioner Mariyam Muna, and was subsequently nominated to lead the independent constitutional body, subject to parliamentary approval.
Dr Rameela is a senior public servant with long-standing experience in government. She previously served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration, before resigning from the post in December 2024 citing health reasons.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives currently comprises five members. In addition to Dr Rameela, the commission includes Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, and members Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
The HRCM is mandated to promote and protect human rights in the Maldives, and to advise the state on matters related to international human rights obligations.
