The Maldives Parliament has approved the reappointment of Mohamed Nasih as president of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) along with two additional members during a special sitting convened from recess today.

Nasih, who first joined the CSC in September 2020, will continue his term alongside Dr Dheeba Moosa and Dr. Hussain Faiz. Their terms are set to conclude on 3 May. The President had submitted six names to Parliament from a pool of applicants during the application period.

Nasih’s reappointment was endorsed by 52 lawmakers, while four voted against him. Dr Dheeba, a former deputy vice-chancellor at the Islamic University of Maldives and spouse of Health Minister Nazim, received 60 votes in favour. Dr Hussain Faiz, a former secretary general of the Supreme Court, was approved by 54 lawmakers.

Nasih’s tenure has previously faced scrutiny. In November last year, following the People’s National Congress (PNC) securing a parliamentary supermajority, no-confidence motions were filed against him over alleged misconduct. After an inquiry, the relevant committee dismissed the allegations and recommended his continuation in office. The PNC-majority Parliament subsequently voted to retain him, while several other independent institution members were removed on the same day.

In the same sitting, Parliament approved the appointment of S. Hulhudhoo and Ahmed Magsoom as members of the Human Rights Commission. Their appointments were supported by 58 out of the 62 participating lawmakers.
