The Parliament today approved Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed as a member of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

All 54 members present voted in favour of Zam’ath’s nomination, making her the latest addition to the media oversight body, which consists of seven members. Her appointment comes as a replacement for Aminath Ameena, whose term at the Commission concluded earlier this week.

Zam’ath was the first choice among six candidates proposed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 12 May for consideration. She emerged as the frontrunner during the vetting process carried out by the Independent Institutions Committee, earning the highest score of 89.29 points. Her closest competitor, Zeena Zahir, a former managing director at Public Service Media (PSM), scored 84.57.

Currently serving as Chief Executive Officer at the Islamic Ministry, Zam’ath also has a background in journalism. She holds a Master’s degree in the field and has previously worked as a reporter for PSM and a number of private media outlets.

The list of nominees evaluated by the committee included Ibrahim Ashraf, Moosa Rilwan, Zeena Zahir, Ali Yoosuf, and Shimla Ahmed, who represented various atolls and islands. However, it was Zam’ath, who ultimately secured the Parliament’s confidence
