MV+ News Desk | November 25, 2024

The Maldives Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions has passed a motion to dismiss several members of the Elections Commission (ECM) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The decision follows an investigation into allegations of compromised integrity and disciplinary violations involving ACC Vice President Abdul Salam, ACC member Thoha Mohamed, ECM Vice President Ali Nashath, and ECM members Mohamed Asif and Dr Mohamed Zahir. The probe also included Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Mohamed Nasih, although he was ultimately not dismissed. The reasons for retaining Nasih remain unclear.

The committee’s deliberations and decision were made during a closed-door session.

Parliament Secretary General Fathimath Niusha earlier highlighted the legal framework underpinning the dismissals. She cited Article 17(a) of the ACC Act, which stipulates that members must perform their duties free from undue influence or threats. Article 17(b) further mandates that members must avoid conflicts of interest in policy-making or resolving cases. According to Niusha, allegations against Salam and Thoha involved breaches of these provisions.

Regarding the ECM and CSC, Niusha noted that laws governing their operations allow for the dismissal of members who violate disciplinary standards.

All committee meetings on the matter were conducted in private, with no further details disclosed about the proceedings or evidence considered.
