Parliament Concludes Final Sitting of the Year and Adjourns for Recess
Parliament wrapped up its final sitting of the year last Thursday, marking the end of its last term before breaking for recess.
During the conclusion of Thursday’s sitting, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla noted that 73.3 per cent of the planned parliamentary work had been accomplished during the final term of 2023.
Speaker Abdulla highlighted the significance of the term’s achievements, stating: “The Parliament undertook crucial work during this term as well. A total of 27 sittings were held and 67 hours were spent in total for parliamentary sitting. Looking at Committee works, a total of 165 meetings were held. The Committee meetings spanned 118 hours.”
During this term, Parliament completed:
- 20 bills
- One resolution
- 13 government motions
- Five motions proposed by individual lawmakers
- Four emergency motions
- 13 questions directed to ministers
- Seven reports addressing other matters
The Speaker expressed gratitude to lawmakers for their dedication and hard work over the term and voiced optimism about continued productivity in the upcoming term.
One of the key amendments passed this term included constitutional changes introducing anti-defection provisions. These new rules will see MPs lose their seats if they switch political parties.
The first parliamentary term of the new year will begin in February.
