The Parliament has endorsed former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Aishath Rameela, for appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Dr Rameela, who resigned from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Cabinet last year following a battle with cancer, will replace Mariyam Muna, the current president of the commission, whose term is due to expire tomorrow.
During Wednesday’s sitting, 63 members of Parliament voted in favour of Dr Rameela’s nomination.
The current members of the commission include Mohamed Shafeeq Mohamed, who serves as vice president, Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Magsoom.
Dr Rameela was appointed as the inaugural Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare on 17 November 2023, when the ministry was newly established under President Muizzu’s administration. Just under two weeks later, on 29 November 2023, she announced that she had been diagnosed with advanced metastatic serous papillary carcinoma, a severe and fast-spreading form of ovarian cancer. She resigned from her ministerial post on 1 December 2024, following surgery.
Her endorsement marks a return to public service after her recovery, and she is set to assume a key role in overseeing the nation’s human rights framework as part of the independent constitutional body.
