Parliament Ends First Session of the Year, Goes into Recess

The Parliament went into recess last Thursday following the conclusion of its first session for the year. The final sitting ended shortly before 5:00pm.
Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that the legislative body conducted 32 sittings over the course of the session, amounting to a total of 59 hours. Additionally, 193 committee meetings were held, collectively lasting 139 hours.
During the session, Parliament completed work on nine bills. Among the key legislative developments were the drafting of a new bill targeting gang-related crime, amendments to the Immigration Act to prohibit entry into the country on Israeli passports, and changes to the Tobacco Control Act introducing a generational smoking ban for individuals born after 2007.
According to the Speaker, the Parliament completed 77 percent of the work submitted for the session.
