North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has formally requested new information, prompting Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon to announce the discovery of pertinent details concerning the May 6, 2021, attack on former President and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Mohamed Aslam yesterday, MP Imthiyaz urged for the acquisition of the aforementioned new information. He further called upon appropriate committees to delve deeper into the matter in light of these revelations.
During yesterday’s parliamentary session, Ghassan disclosed this development while responding to queries raised by MPs. Central Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy sought assurance from Ghassan regarding the government’s commitment to thoroughly investigate the attack on Nasheed and ensure justice is served.
In response, Ghassan affirmed that the investigation would be conducted meticulously, highlighting that significant progress had already been made with the uncovering of new information.
“There are some observations made so far on this matter that the Defence Ministry can actually share with this parliament. However, we can only release that information when you do the required work to seek it,” Ghassan stated.
He further reassured that the Defence Forces would maintain their steadfast dedication to upholding security mandates as prescribed by law.
Prior to assuming his ministerial role in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet, Ghassan had served as a member of the Parliament’s Committee on National Security (241 Committee), which had previously conducted an inquiry into the attack.
In related developments, it was noted that Adhuham Ahmed has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of active participation in the bombing incident. The trials of the remaining seven accused are still ongoing.
