The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has filed a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of the Parliament, setting the stage for a parliamentary debate.
The motion, which carries political weight, was approved with a unanimous three-line whip by the MDP prosecutor’s office during a meeting held yesterday.
According to Ihavandhoo MDP MP Mohamed Shifau, members of the party expressed consensus on the importance of addressing the no-confidence motion before proceeding with other parliamentary business, emphasising the adherence to constitutional and parliamentary rules.
The scheduled debate on the no-confidence motion has been agendered to take place on Sunday, with MDP MPs requesting active participation during the session.
During this session, former President Mohamed Nasheed, currently serving as Speaker, will be allotted 30 minutes to respond to the motion. Each member will subsequently have a three-minute time frame to engage in debate and discussion.
It is worth noting that this marks the second instance of the no-confidence motion being filed, with the first case being withdrawn during the midst of the second round of the last presidential election campaign.
