The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed that the announcement of the parliamentary election date will be delayed as they consider a letter submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The MDP contends that the election, scheduled during the month of Ramadan, is being influenced by the government. In response, they have formally requested a postponement until after the conclusion of Ramadan.

The Vice Chairman of the ECM, Ismail Habeeb, addressed the matter in a press conference today, citing the MDP’s letter as the reason for the delay. The letter, received on Thursday has prompted the commission to engage in discussions before making an official decision later this week. A meeting with the MDP is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:30 am to further deliberate on the election date.

Habeeb emphasised that the Commission will take into account various factors and consult with relevant stakeholders before finalizing the election date. Considerations will include the convenience of the public, candidates, and the ECM.

Additionally, the ECM has urged the Parliament to amend the law, suggesting two possible solutions to address the issue. The first proposal involves shortening the 30-day campaign period for candidates to 20 days, with the election scheduled for March 9, just two days before Ramadan begins.

The second option suggests an extension of the statutory 120-day period, allowing for an earlier start to the election process.
