Today’s parliamentary session adjourned due to insufficient quorum, leaving members unable to proceed with their agenda for the day.
The Democrats MP Hassan Latheef has today introduced a motion in Parliament, igniting discussions and drawing attention to concerns regarding the irregularity of session schedules.
The motion, aiming to reinforce the mandated three-day weekly sessions, underlined the essential responsibilities of Parliament towards the public interest and constitutional duties.
Addressing the House, Hassan Latheef emphasised the significance of parliamentary sessions in fulfilling the constitutional obligations entrusted to Parliament. However, despite the pressing need for legislative deliberations, recent sessions have failed to adhere to the stipulated frequency.
During today’s session, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem initiated the voting process on Hassan Latheef’s motion. Nevertheless, the proceedings encountered a setback when the requisite quorum was not met within the allocated time frame. Despite an initial count of 23 members at the session’s onset, only 16 members were present when the vote was called, falling short of the minimum requirement of 22 members for a valid vote.
In response to the shortfall in attendance, the Vice-Speaker opted to adjourn the motion temporarily. The decision aims to facilitate a subsequent vote on the motion at a later stage when a sufficient number of members are in attendance, ensuring a fair and democratic parliamentary process.
The adjournment underscores the importance of parliamentary participation and adherence to procedural norms in the legislative process. As discussions on parliamentary efficiency continue, attention is drawn to the necessity of upholding session schedules to fulfil the obligations entrusted to Parliament by the constitution.
