The launch forms part of a broader national programme to expand passport services to all atolls across the country. Spearheaded by Maldives Immigration, the initiative seeks to address logistical challenges that have long required residents to travel to Malé for passport issuance and renewal.
Once the programme is fully implemented, citizens will no longer need to visit the capital for such services. Instead, they will be able to obtain or renew their passports on their home island or a designated service island within their atoll.
The expansion, which also includes the issuance of Maldivian identity cards, aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy commitment to enhance accessibility and efficiency in public service delivery.
Formally inaugurated on 16 November 2024, the programme continues to progress steadily, with Maldives Immigration confirming that passport services are now available in all atolls except one, as the nationwide rollout nears completion.
