An environmental group called Thimaaveshi have launched a petition calling for an end to deforestation and the destruction of farmland in Addu, raising concerns over food security and the impact on local livelihoods.

This petition follows the decision of Addu City Council to build a road through a farmland in the Fehelakilhi region of Hithadhoo.

“For several years, communities in Addu City have experienced the consequences of widespread deforestation and the loss of fertile land, prompting growing anxiety over the depletion of natural resources and critical habitats,” stated the petition.

Activists argue that unchecked deforestation, facilitated by the City Council, threatens essential public resources that form part of the natural heritage and economic resilience of the local community.

Environmentalists also claim this will lead to the destruction of one of the final remaining green and fertile areas in Hithadhoo, impacting local livelihoods and food production. Farmers, who have sought clarity from decision-makers, have reportedly been met with the response that the project is proceeding as a matter of ‘tharahgee’ (progress).

Critics argue that such ad-hoc decision-making disregards community interests, failing to consider the long-term cost-benefit implications. The planned development is expected to result in the loss of key food crops, including taro, a staple for many residents.

Food security remains a pressing concern for the Maldives, and environmentalists stress that the destruction of one of the last remaining fertile lands in Addu should not be tolerated.

“We call on the Minister for Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya, and all other relevant authorities to intervene and prevent the loss of taro fields, fertile lands and local livelihood assets in Hithadhoo. These losses will undermine community lives, livelihoods, food security, and environmental and economic resilience. We call on Addu City Council to stop the planned destruction of the community’s taro crops and fertile lands in Hithadhoo,” the petition states.
