Petition Urges Cut to MPs’ Salaries and Benefits to Address Economic Strain

An online petition has been launched advocating for a reduction in the salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs) to address ongoing economic challenges.
The petition calls for a reduction in MPs’ salaries and benefits, including committee allowances, and urges the removal of premium health insurance provided to MPs.
It also advocates for equal healthcare access, in line with that available to the general public, and seeks the discontinuation of allowances given to former MPs.
The petition argues that the current income of MPs does not reflect their workload and is significantly higher than the average income of other citizens. It suggests that this disparity is particularly unjust during times of economic hardship.
Currently, an MP receives MVR 85,000 per month in salary and allowances.
In a parliamentary debate last July, several MPs voiced concerns that their current salaries and allowances were insufficient.
