Aishath Shiman and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, two prominent youth activists who led protests demanding justice for a 21-year-old woman who fell from a building in Malé on April 18, have been officially charged.

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has dropped charges against the two youth activists who led protests in May calling for justice for a 21-year-old woman who fell from a building in Malé.

The PGO confirmed that Abdullah Mahzoom Majid and Aishath Shiman were charged on 25 June, with Abdullah accused of physically confronting a police officer and Shiman accused of attempting to obstruct police duties. After reviewing the case, the PGO said it decided not to pursue the charges, noting that neither individual had prior police records, that no person or property was harmed, and that the circumstances and severity of the alleged offences did not warrant further action.

The two activists were arrested following clashes with police during the demonstrations and were held in judicial custody before being released. Their arrests and subsequent charges drew public concern, especially when compared to the treatment of Raudh Ahmed Zilal — the main suspect in the incident that triggered the protests.

Raudh, who was with the 21-year-old woman when she fell from a ninth-floor building on 18 April, faces a single charge of failing to assist a person in danger without justifiable reason, an offence carrying a maximum sentence of one month. After spending more than a month in custody, he was released on the PGO’s recommendation that his remand had exceeded the likely sentence.

The protests began with many young people gathering near the police criminal-investigations headquarters demanding transparency in the investigation into the fall of a 21-year-old woman. Demonstrators disputed the official description of the fall as accidental, alleging a possible cover-up and calling for accountability.

Public anger grew when reports surfaced suggesting that individuals present at a party on the night of the incident had connections to senior government officials.
