Physio Clinic terminated two of its employees, accused of assaulting their patients in recently surfaced videos and reported them to the police.
Videos posted on X yesterday at noon show a worker at the clinic’s Hulhumale’ branch using force and a pair of scissors while the child backs away. The worker later uses the scissors on the child’s hands, and photographs posted by the parent show skin scraped off the boy’s arms.
The clinic released a statement yesterday evening stating they were deeply saddened by the incident in the videos.
“We are deeply concerned and saddened by a recent incident at our clinic involving a member of staff and a child in our care. The behaviour in question is totally unacceptable and does not reflect the values or standards of conduct we expect within our organisation,” Physio Clinic said.
They said that as soon as it was brought to their attention, they took immediate action, which included terminating the staff involved in the alleged assault and another staff member who was present when this was happening. They said they have also reported this incident to the police and have handed over all relevant footage to the police as well.
“In light of the seriousness of the situation, we also made the decision to temporarily close Physio Clinic annex,” the statement said, referring to the Physio Clinic branch in Hulhumale, where this incident occurred.
Physio Clinic is a clinic specialising in physiotherapy, speech, behaviour, and occupational therapy, psychological profile, special education, and counselling, according to their Meta profile. To ensure a safe and respectful environment is provided for the children and the family they serve, live-monitoring has been implemented in their operating procedures for a long time, they said, with access from designated areas of the facility being available for parents.
“While no system can completely eliminate the risk of individual misconduct, we believe that proactive oversight is an important safeguard in maintaining a safe and trusted environment,” Physio Clinic said.
The clinic said they will cooperate with the authorities on the matter.
Additional Case of Misconduct
Since the initial videos circulating on X have surfaced, another parent posted photographs and screenshots of communication with the clinic over injuries her child suffered at the clinic as well. These were posted eight hours after Physio Clinic released its statement.
According to the information she posted, the clinic said she did not receive an answer from the clinic, besides the clinic stating they did not know what happened, regarding the injuries her daughter had. The photographs show a scraped chin and a busted little toe, red and swollen.
She said even though she complained then, she “got nothing” in the way of a response as she did not have videos to prove her child sustained injuries at the clinic. The dates on the chatlog screenshots are dated March 19 of this year.
“How many kids must have gone through such torture and pain in the name of therapy. Please stop using our kids as money-making machines, and even if your aim is only to earn money, then the least you could do is not harm or hurt them just because they can’t express,” she said on her post.
