According to the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, a total of 263 piles have been installed across 68 onshore and offshore locations, marking the most challenging stage of the bridge project.
The ministry confirmed that, with the completion of this critical phase, overall progress on the project has reached 60.84 percent. The 6.7-kilometre bridge is being constructed by India’s Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
Earlier in April, the world’s highest precast segment using the long line method was installed on the bridge. The Indian High Commission has stated that the precast segments produced in Gulhifalhu for this project are the tallest of their kind globally.
The Thilamale’ Bridge is expected to cost approximately USD 500 million, equivalent to MVR 7.7 billion. This funding consists of a USD 400 million line of credit from India’s Exim Bank and a USD 100 million grant from the Government of India.
