Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced the initiation of a pilot programme aimed at introducing nationalism as a distinct subject for Grade 4 students.

Minister Shafeeu highlighted that while aspects of nationalism are already integrated into the national curriculum, establishing it as a separate subject is envisioned to enhance the emphasis placed on this theme by students, parents, and educators.

The pilot programme, scheduled to commence within the next three weeks, is intended to precede the official inclusion of nationalism as a standalone subject in the curriculum. Minister Shafeeu underscored the importance of assessing the current level of nationalism embedded in other subjects before the pilot programme is rolled out.

Furthermore, Minister Shafeeu disclosed that the Ministry of Education is actively soliciting input from professionals to shape the curriculum for teaching nationalism as an independent subject. Seeking technical guidance for the development of educators and the provision of resources to facilitate student learning in this area is also underway.

The move to introduce nationalism as a separate subject aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s strategic plan for his initial 14 weeks in office. The overarching goal is to nurture a sense of nationalism and cultivate a generation that holds their culture and heritage in high esteem.
