Pioneer of Maldives Tourism M.U. Maniku Passes Away

Universal Enterprises Pvt Ltd has issued a statement announcing the passing of Mohamed Umar “M.U.” Maniku on 30th August 2025 at 06:30 Singapore time at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Maniku, who served as Chairman of Universal Enterprises, was widely recognised as a pioneer in the Maldivian tourism industry. He played a key role in the inception and development of the sector, and his vision, loyalty, and integrity left a lasting impact on generations of industry professionals.
Throughout his career, Maniku was known as a guiding figure and mentor, providing steady leadership that helped Universal Enterprises navigate decades of change. His contributions to the industry and the community extended far beyond his official role, leaving a legacy that is remembered with deep respect and affection.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. The family has expressed gratitude to all who have offered support and condolences during this difficult time.
Maniku, honoured with the Corporate Maldives Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, is often called “The Man Who Built Paradise” for pioneering Maldivian tourism with the first resort, Kurumba Village, in 1972. His vision transformed Maldives into a global destination despite limited infrastructure.
He redeveloped Kurumba into a world-class hotel in 1987, raising the country’s tourism standards. Under his leadership, Universal Enterprises grew to manage eight luxury resorts and partner with global brands, inspiring the industry’s growth.
Beyond business, Maniku held key government and industry roles, including founding Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), and championed education, training, sustainability, and community development, impacting thousands of Maldivians.
