The People’s National Congress (PNC) has opened applications for candidates seeking to contest in the party’s primary for the upcoming local council elections.
PNC campaign manager and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah announced at a press conference today that applications will open on 1 December and close at 6pm on 15 December. He confirmed that the primary will take place on 27 December.
Falah said that, in addition to existing party members, new members who join before the deadline may also contest. However, prospective candidates must first complete the membership process through the Elections Commission.
He added that candidates will be permitted to vote only at ballot boxes placed on their registered islands, a measure he said was intended to minimise accusations of vote fraud.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen, who also attended the press conference, said more than 1,400 candidates are expected to stand in the local council elections. He noted that applications must be submitted through a designated portal, which is integrated with the forms and information required by the Elections Commission.
