Former Maldivian leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has announced his endorsement of 47 candidates under his newly-formed party People’s National Front (PNF), for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Yameen, who previously led the PPM-PNC coalition, has been serving an 11-year prison sentence since December 25, 2022, after being convicted of bribery and money laundering related to the sale of V. Aarah.

Following a transfer to house arrest on October 1, 2023, coinciding with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s victory in the presidential elections, Yameen swiftly distanced himself from the ruling coalition. He subsequently spearheaded efforts to establish a new party, the People’s National Front (PNF).

Mohamed Maleeh Jamal confirmed that 28 parliamentary candidates endorsed by the ex-leader submitted their candidacy forms yesterday, with an additional 19 intending to do so today.

Although the People’s National Front (PNF) secured approval from the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) to begin the registration process as a political party on November 29, the party has yet to formally apply for registration, pending Yameen’s release. The party has stated its intention to proceed with registration once Yameen’s legal situation allows.

Yameen, who has appealed his conviction with the High Court, remains actively involved in PNF’s activities despite legal restrictions on his political engagement. He has been seen participating in party meetings and campaign events, indicating his continued influence within the political sphere.
