PNF Opens Nominations for Leadership Posts Ahead of Inaugural Assembly
Former president Abdulla Yameen
The People’s National Front (PNF), led by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has opened applications for its leadership positions, with internal elections set to take place at the party’s national convention on 30 November.
In a statement, the party said members will elect a president, two vice-presidents, a secretary-general and a registrar, alongside 14 members of the party’s Senate. Until now, those roles have been held on an interim basis.
PNF was established in April 2024 and has operated with a provisional leadership structure pending the first full assembly.
The party emerged following a split between Yameen and current President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Yameen previously headed the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) before backing the creation of the People’s National Congress (PNC) amid uncertainty over PPM’s future. Muizzu contested the presidential election under the PNC banner, and a large share of PPM members subsequently shifted to PNC. PPM was later dissolved.
Since the split, Yameen has frequently criticised President Muizzu and the government. Many politicians and supporters previously aligned with Yameen have since migrated to Muizzu’s camp and the PNC.
