Police Arrest Three Men Under New Gang Crime Law For Carrying Sharp Weapons

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested three men in Malé last night under the Gang and Other Serious Offences Act, which came into effect last month, for carrying sharp weapons.

Police confirmed the arrests were made on charges of possessing two knives. The individuals have been identified as Ibrahim Zaidan, 22, and Ahmed Nawaaz, 30, both from Morning View in Machangoali, Malé, and Mohamed Shidaadh, 22, from Bashimage, Maabaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.

According to the Criminal Court order issued yesterday, the police submitted an incident report, intelligence findings, and photographs of the knives recovered from the scene.

The court ordered that Nawaaz remain in custody for 30 days, while Zaidan and Shidaadh will be detained for 15 days each.

The Gang and Other Serious Offences Act was introduced last month with the aim of curbing gang-related activity and strengthening measures against serious crimes.
