Police Arrest Youth Suspected in Multiple Scams Totalling MVR 30,000

A 30-year-old Maldivian man has been arrested in connection with twelve separate scam cases, the Maldives Police Service announced.

The suspect has been identified as Saif Ahmed Didi from Ma. Rabeeu, Male’. Police revealed that he defrauded multiple victims of more than MVR 30,000 by using various social media platforms to convince them to transfer money into his account. He was apprehended in Hulhumale’ Phase II under a court order, with assistance from members of the public.

Following his arrest, the Criminal Court has remanded Saif in custody for ten days as the Maldives Police Service’s Anti-Scam Centre continues its investigation.

Authorities also disclosed that Saif has a prior criminal record involving vandalism and theft.

Scams have become increasingly common in the Maldives, prompting the Police to establish a dedicated unit to address this growing concern.
