The Maldives Police Service will implement changes to the traffic flow around the marketplace in Malé ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The adjustments aim to ease congestion during peak hours, as the marketplace experiences an unusual surge in activity during Ramadan.

Sub-Inspector of Police Hussain Aslah stated that a plan has been developed to manage traffic in the area more efficiently. As an initial step, information regarding the changes has been shared with vendors and cargo boats operating in the vicinity.

Vendors have been instructed to keep their goods within designated zones and avoid placing them on pavements or in parking areas. Authorities have warned that any goods obstructing these spaces will be removed by the police and the city council.

During Ramadan, police patrols will be increased in the marketplace area, particularly from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, when traffic is at its peak. Changes to traffic flow will also be implemented, including the closure of lanes leading to Boduthakurufaanu Magu between 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm. If traffic congestion becomes severe, Boduthakurufaanu Magu will be closed to four-wheelers travelling west to east, allowing only two-wheelers to pass.

Authorities have urged businesses and shoppers to adhere to the new regulations and be mindful when parking or driving in the area to avoid disruptions to traffic and pedestrian movement.
