The operation was carried out following a tip-off that vapes were being sold illegally in the city. As part of the operation, the residence of a suspected vape dealer and the café where he worked were searched. Authorities recovered 84 vape cartridges and money believed to have been obtained from the sale of vapes.
A 27-year-old Bangladeshi national, MD Abu Sufyaan, was arrested in connection with the case.
In a separate search, a shop in Galolhu was also raided, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of vapes suspected to be part of the illegal trade.
The operation was conducted with the involvement of the police, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
The Maldives’ ban on the import, sale, and use of vaping devices and accessories officially came into force on 15 December 2024.
This measure stemmed from an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which was ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 13 November 2024. The legislation aimed to curb the prevalence of e-cigarette use and regulate related activities more stringently.
