The Maldives Police Service (MPS) denies allegations of data leaks from digital devices seized for investigative purposes, stating that such devices are handled in line with policies meeting international standards.

In a press release issued yesterday, police said there is no possibility of data breaches from devices under their custody. The statement followed the circulation of a photograph of a young Maldivian activist, Aishath Shimon, reportedly after her phone was seized by police last Thursday.

Police had confiscated Shimon’s phone on the basis that she had threatened President Dr Mohamed Muizzu through a post on the social media platform X. Shortly after the seizure, a new account appeared on X under the name ‘Shimon’s phone’, posting a photograph of the activist.

Shimon has alleged that the image was leaked by the police. In response, MPS reaffirmed that all evidence, including digital devices, is managed in accordance with established protocols designed to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure.

The police further stated that investigations are conducted with the highest level of professionalism and in full compliance with the law, ensuring that all data and evidence remain protected.
