The individual, identified as Arfat Hossain, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi national, is alleged to have been residing in the country illegally.

The summon was issued after a report surfaced on social media accusing Hossain of the aforementioned activities. Maldives Immigration has granted him a five-day period to present himself to the authorities.

The allegations came to light after a video was circulated on social media showing a local individual questioning Hossain at a parking zone near Boduthakurufaanu Magu, in front of Marry Brown.

In the video, Hossain can be seen with plastic bags, which he claims are used to take cats home. The person who posted the video also shared footage purportedly from outside Hossain’s residence, with claims that neighbours had reported finding cat body parts in the vicinity and hearing cat cries.

The video further showed a narrow lane leading to Hossain’s residence and a ventilation pipe attached to the house, which the narrator claimed was being used in food preparation. The video also alleged that Hossain had previously made and sold burgers and submarines, which were labelled with a logo in English, although the products no longer carry this branding.

Concerns have been raised by the video’s narrator regarding the safety and authenticity of food products sold locally, especially those consumed by school children.

The Maldives government has been actively addressing the issue of undocumented expatriate workers and violations of immigration laws. Recent efforts have included frequent raids conducted by Maldives Immigration and the Maldives Police Service, targeting expatriates involved in food preparation under extremely unhygienic conditions.
