Police Detain Foreigner at VIA Over Currency Offence

A Bangladeshi national has been arrested at Velana International Airport (VIA) with a large amount of cash in his possession.

The Maldives Police Service reported that the 30-year-old man, identified as Rafeegul Islam, was taken into custody on Tuesday following a tip-off regarding illegal foreign currency exchange near the resort stands at the airport.

Tourist Police carried out the arrest and search, during which they discovered over MVR 68,000, more than USD 1,700, and currencies from other countries. Police investigations have so far revealed that the individual had been residing in the Maldives unlawfully.

The man was presented before the court and has been remanded in custody for 15 days. The case remains under investigation.
