According to multi media, the Parliament’s Communication Director, Hassan Ziyau, confirmed that the complaint was lodged regarding the alleged bribery of certain MPs who switched their party affiliations in the lead-up to the presidential election. The case was formally submitted to the police yesterday evening.
Nasheed, formerly a prominent figure within the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had recently aligned himself with the MDP’s breakaway faction, known as the Democrats, after an internal party dispute. A number of MPs and other notable political figures from the MDP also defected to the Democrats. However, a significant portion of these individuals subsequently returned to the MDP after a short stint with the Democrats.
In response to these defections, Nasheed took to Twitter yesterday to express his concerns. He claimed that the return of Democrats’ members to the MDP had been influenced by bribery. Nasheed openly criticized President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, accusing him of employing state resources to allure MPs and cautioned that such actions would not yield positive results, but rather tarnish his reputation.
Nasheed’s frustrations arise as Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef and Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan recently rejoined the MDP after a brief period with the Democrats.
Senior officials from the Democrats have also alleged that their members are being financially incentivized to rejoin the MDP. However, these allegations have been refuted by the MDP.
